The roundups were also social gatherings and celebrations that could last a week or more and included barbecues, dances and competition among the vaqueros in roping and bronc riding. The California Rodeo Salinas honors the origin of the word rodeo and pronounces it in the traditional Spanish way- ro-day-o! The Rodeo is surrounded by a full week of activities and was dubbed Big Week way back in 1911 when the first Wild West Show was held. The California Rodeo Salinas will celebrate its 97th Anniversary July 19-22nd, 2007. The California Rodeo Salinas is the largest Rodeo in California and draws over 800 of the best cowboys and cowgirls across America to compete for almost $500,000 in prize money and the coveted gold and silver Salinas belt buckle. This annual event also draws over 40,000 fans to the Salinas Sports Complex each year to see action-packed rodeo events such as bull riding, team roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding and more. The track that surrounds the arena is also full of action, including horse races, specialty performances, barrel racing, mutton busting and several other crowd-pleasing events. Outside of the track and arena, the Rodeo provides entertainment for all ages including a Kids Corral for the little buckaroos, a Teen Lounge complete with video games and a great social scene in the Coors Bull Crossing tent.
